About Hair Loss

On one level, we all experience hair loss every day: people lose an average of 100 hairs each day. This may seem like a lot, but due to the amount of hair on the head normally, it’s insignificant. Sometimes, though, hair loss accelerates and becomes permanent due to genetic factors, certain medications, or a medical condition.

How Common Is Hair Loss?

Hair loss is exceedingly common, affecting roughly 3 million people in the US every year. Some forms of hair loss are temporary and may affect any area of the body, but the most common forms of hair loss are male and female pattern baldness, also called androgenetic alopecia. This type of hair loss is usually permanent, and it may be gradual or occur very suddenly.

As the name implies, androgenetic alopecia progresses differently depending on gender. For men, it usually presents as a receding hairline and a thinning of the hair around the crown of the head. For women, it’s most common to experience thinning hair around where the hair is parted, or general thinning on the top of the head.

Can Hair Loss Be Cured?

Unfortunately, there’s no medical cure for permanent hair loss – but we can offer a variety of options to hide, slow, or potentially reverse hair loss. At Dermatology Consultants, we work with each individual patient to develop a personalized treatment plan that best serves your needs. No matter what degree of hair loss you’re experiencing, we’ll work with you to create a treatment plan that works for you and helps you minimize the impact of hair loss.
